Dr. Jonathan Preminger founded SteriLux Systems while at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/ Northwell as a solution to the critical and high cost issue of Healthcare Acquired Infections (HAIs). Dr. Preminger, his fellow medical students and other doctors would wear White Coats every day and see many patients. At the end of each day, Jonathan would hang up his coat in the locker or on a hook like most physicians and staff before heading home. The next day, he would use cleaned scrubs and other new or sanitized equipment, but both Jonathan and his colleagues would use the same used white coat day after day. This didn’t seem right to Jonathan, and he had to learn more: A white coat worn and not cleaned regularly is likely not sanitary and could cause patient contamination.
Despite its prevalent use in healthcare for sterilization, UVC light was not used in any product designed to sterilize clothing or garments. Dr. Preminger realized that he had tapped into unchartered territory in the fight against HAIs, and was off to turn his idea into a business.
As Dr. Preminger finished medical school and began his residency at Weill Cornell Hospital, he partnered with experienced business builders – Michael Lane and Robert Hussey – to bring his idea to reality.
